James Mulligan, artist, ardent golfer, retired physician and, overall, a wonderful Dad. This website is dedicated to my father, E. James Mulligan, and his artwork. My close friend, Victoria Webb and myself, have listed quite a number of Dad’s works that he produced over the past 30 years or so. He just celebrated his 100th birthday and is still playing golf several times a week plus providing the world with his artistic talents. Jim Mulligan grew up in New England with his own father being the owner of a large chemical company in Rhode Island and also a member of Congress. Dad attended Colgate University, then Brown University where he was the Editor of the Brown University campus newspaper. His writing talents were recognized by Hollywood and he was offered a job writing movie scripts, which he turned down in favor of a medical career. His entry into the medical profession was somewhat of a fluke. While he was majoring in chemistry and biology at Brown, he had not yet decided what to do with his educational credentials, but was coaxed into taking the pre-med entry exam at Yale University which he passed with one of the highest scores of the applicants. (Much to the surprise of his fellow exam takers who had actually wanted to apply to Yale). About this time, Dad’s artistic talents were beginning to blossom. This was the early 1930’s when medical journals and publications could not publish accurate photographs of medical procedures and relied on hand colored drawings to assist in the explanation of the various human body parts and the associated operations. He aimed his medical career toward being a medical illustrator but eventually took an interest in ear, eye and nose surgery which became his major as he obtained his medical degree. He interned at Johns Hopkins Medical School in Baltimore, became a resident physician and also taught at Hopkins. During this time (1940’s) he raised and raced thoroughbred horses. His ear, eye and nose practice was in Baltimore where he had an office until his retirement in the 1970’s. He was a noted yachtsman and was a member of the Baltimore Yacht Club. Aside from his boating interests, dating back into the early 1950’s, his golfing talents were (and still are!) somewhat of a legend. He is known for drives straight up the fairway and very exact putting. He still "plays his age" for 18 holes. Dad’s artwork, as indicated in this website, spans about 30 years. He has attended many art schools including the Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts and was a member of the Maryland Art Society. Vickie and I hope that you enjoy Dad’s artwork. Happy Birthday Dad!!!
